Recent Congressional Study Shows Vets Face Unemployment

Mar 26, 2008 in Armed Forces Branches, Education, Tips, Veterans

A study by Abt Associates showed 18% unemployment for servicemembers discharged from 2004-2006. Things haven’t been so rosy since then so we imagine the numbers might even worse today. The study also showed significantly more unemployment for veterans when compared to non-vets even when the demographics were broken down by sex, race, age, marital status, and education levels.

This is not good news for anyone looking to get out of the service soon.

Navy CLEP Testing Suspension is Hurting Sailors

Mar 26, 2008 in Armed Forces Branches, Education, Free for Military, Testing

The Stars and Stripes reported today that sailors have been hurt by the suspension of some tests normally offered at Navy College offices. Armed Forces Advantage™ was the first to break this story to the world-wide web and we are saddened to hear that sailors are having harder times finishing their degree plans. Our original post from March 5th can be found here with contact information for the DANTES test center.

Remember, only paper tests and Navy sites were impacted by the cheating and test compromise. You can still paper test at other service test centers and take computer based testing everywhere it is available.

Don’t let these types of issues stand in your way. Get out there now and finish your Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as soon as you can. The military is giving away free money for you to do this so take your benefits and use them!

If you’re working on your doctorate - more power to you. Drop us a comment and let us know how you’re doing it.

If you’ve been impacted by the testing suspension, We’d like to hear your story. Please leave a comment or email us here at Armed Forces Advantage™

California Educational Benefits for Military

Mar 26, 2008 in Armed Forces Branches, Education, Veterans

The State Hornet at California State University, Sacramento reports that CA universities are offering in-state tuition to “U.S. troops regardless of their home state.” This is part of a package of benefits offered to active duty and veterans in California. In state tuition costs are significantly reduced when compared to out of state costs so this could represent a major savings for military students in California.

If anyone has further information regarding this benefit or has used it and has more details, please comment to this post.

Vets returning to school from active duty will also have priority registration over even returning seniors. That’s a good deal as well!

I just found out Excelsior College (a regionally accredited Bachelor and Master conferring school) is now offering the same benefits to spouses it offers active duty military. This is a great deal. They give discounted tuition, accept CLEPs and DANTES exams, offer online courses, and understand what it means to deal with the military. If you are a spouse and have been waiting to start your bachelors or masters - Now is the time to check out Excelsior
